UBM AND MELVILLE LEAD DRIVE TO IMPROVE EDUCATION IN NAIROBI
posted on: 25/11/2011 12:03:07

UBM’s Amie Willenberg and Mirabelle Chatterjee are leading a new initiative with Melville Exhibition and Event Services to donate much-needed money and goods from the events industry to local communities in the Kenyan capital.

Working with charity group Harambee Schools Kenya (HSK), individuals from the two companies have raised £5,000 in cash donations plus more than £50,000 in goods and services to improve education opportunities in Nairobi. Items include musical instruments, sports equipment, sewing machines, lawn mowers, desks, chairs and safes.

Six people from UBM and Melville will head over to Kenya’s capital city with three HSK representatives from 5 to 16 December to visit the communities.

Those who donated goods and services include Solutions 2, Melville, Thorns, SO Group, The Works, Denim Creative, Expo Floors, UBM and Worldwide Exhibition Specialists.

The goods are being collated, shipped and distributed by Worldwide Logistics for free. Willenberg hoped UBM could repeat the initiative in 2012 in other parts of the world and engage in these types of projects long-term. The initiative ties into the company’s plans to actively engage in the communities it serves using its resources and expertise.

“I’m delighted that we’re able to support Mirabelle [Chatterjee] and Amie [Willenberg],” UBM CEO David Levin said. “Giving is not simply about writing a cheque, it’s about personal engagement and personal contribution.

“UBM is keen to support its people as they engage with the wider community and also through the development of its Responsible Business family of not-for-profit events that now run in Brazil and the UK. These are soon to launch in India and the USA and are about developing and supporting the wider NGO and not-for-profit community.”

MD of one donator Total Security Installations Peter Terry was also delighted to support such a worthy cause. The company has donated the safes.

“We commend the work of HSK and all those who are contributing to the project,” Terry said.
