Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) has showcased plans to build an additional 3,500sqm of event space during IMEX in Frankfurt.

The new facility, which is due to open in spring 2013, provides an additional 3,500sqm of event space, which will more than double the EICC’s current options. The existing building offers eight event spaces that can divide into 15 separate areas. The expansion will adds a further nine new major event spaces, with subdivision options to form 12 distinct areas.

As previously reported in EN, EICC secured £85m in funding from owner, City of Edinburgh Council, to fund expansion of its events offering as well as build a 17,500sqm Grade A office space on the site adjacent to the EICC.

The venue laid the foundations for the new expansion last November.

EICC has also revealed event spaces will be given names including the near 1,600sqm main hall, complete with moving floor system and clear span tension wire grid ceiling.

“Getting detailed floor plans into the marketplace and giving names to our new event spaces is the toolkit that brings our expansion space to life for event organisers.”

EICC head of sales and marketing Louise Andrew, said. “We are now a third of the way through a 126-week build programme and opening scheduled for spring 2013 is fast approaching”.

IMEX is being held at Messe Frankfurt until 26 May.
