Event industry takes to the fairways for In The Rough golf team challenge day

Golfers dodged the summer showers in between holes at In The Rough, the recent event industry golf team challenge day.

The competition, at Hellidon Lakes Golf and Spa Hotel, Northamptonshire, on 19 July, was organised by Mervyn Ramsey, organiser of 'Sticky Wicket', and supported by the Event Supplier and Services Association (ESSA). Towergate Coverex sponsored the day.

The day brought together people from across the industry, including 18 teams and 72 golfers from organisers, venues and suppliers, such as Alfa Display, Aztec Event Services, Brand Events, Concept Furniture, EC&O Venues, exhibit 3 sixty, F2F Events, Fresh Montgomery, Golf Live, Melville, Perton Signs, Ricoh Arena, SO Group, The NEC, Towergate Insurance, Unibox and UFI/Mems.

“This was the second golf day I’ve been to, and I enjoyed it very much. I would recommend the event to all my colleagues, and I’ll be back next year,” said Concept Furniture Group financial director Tony Cocum.

Phil Smith of exhibit 3 sixty won the individual award with 40 points, followed by Michael Holmes of Unibox and Gary Everitt of LondonEdge.

The overall team winner of the Event Industry Golf Team Challenge 2012 was exhibit 3 sixty, with 97 points. There were also competitions for 'nearest the pin' on four holes, longest drive and best-dressed golfer.

“The golf day is a good opportunity to meet with the contractors that work in our venues regularly on a more relaxed basis than is possible during events,” said EC&O Venues customer services manager Siân Richards. “It's also an opportunity to meet with other venues, clients and suppliers, as well as making new contacts.”

The event raised around £4,000 for two charities, Hospitality Action (the trade charity offering a crucial lifeline to people from the hospitality industry) and Events for Namuwongo (supporting Namuwongo, a slum community on the edge of Kampala in Uganda).
 
The charity’s first event raised more than £83,000 at its first charity dinner in May.
 
“We based the event on the highly successful BECA Golf Days, but expanded it to bring together organisers, venues and service suppliers in a day that combines fun, entertainment and a chance to network, not only within your sector but across the other sectors that make up the events industry,” said ESSA chair and Aztec Event Services MD, John Robson.

“The golf event was a sell-out and it was fantastic to see so many new faces from the supplier, organiser and venue communities. Next year we plan to work even closer with our sister associations the AEO and AEV and our industry promotional body FaceTime to build on this success.”
